Miles Davis was a music and style icon and this famous quote from Miles is the probably best advice anyone can be given regarding the creative process. And this was certainly the way that Miles himself approached music and art. With no fear, always moving forward, taking risks, working with young unknown musicians and pushing the boundaries of Jazz. Herbie
Hancock, now a Jazz legend in his own right received some great lessons from his mentor Miles Davis, here is what happened a young Herbie played totally the wrong chord during one of Miles's solos in Stockholm in 1967.
“Miles pauses for a fraction of a second, and then he plays some notes that somehow, miraculously, make my chord sound right… And then Miles just took off from there, unleashing a solo that took the song in a new direction. The crowd went absolutely crazy.”
Miles taught Herbie that night that integrating the ‘wrong’ chord into the performance was much more important than playing the ‘right’ chord, don’t loose sight of the main goal, and Do not Fear mistakes, There are none.
