John Robert"Joe"Cocker, OBE (20 May 1944 – 22 Dec 2014) was an English singer and musician known for his "gravel" voice, unique body movement when performing, and he stylish personal versions of popular songs.
Joe's early influences were Ray Charles and Lonnie Donegan. In 1961, under the stage name Vance Arnold, he was part of a new group, Vance Arnold and the Avengers. The name was a combination of Vince Everett, (Elvis's character in Jailhouse Rock- he misheard it as Vance); and country singer Eddy Arnold.
