Produced by John Brower, The Toronto Rock & Roll Revival was held at Varsity Stadium at University of Toronto in September 1969. This 12-hour music festival boasted performances from Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis. Little Richard, The Doors & Alice Cooper. With Kim Fowley as master of ceremonies. The festival was almost canceled a week earlier due to poor ticket sales. Kim & Rodney Bingenheimer came to the rescue by suggesting that Brower called Apple records and invited John & Yoko to come knowing that Lennon was a huge fan of Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent & Little Richard. The Beatle did one better by not only attending but insisting that they play, so the debut of the Plastic Ono Band happened there with John & Yoko backed by Eric Clapton, Klaus Voormann & Alan White. As soon as CHUM radio announced that John & Yoko were coming the Rock & Roll Revival sold out the same afternoon.
Fun Fact: It is said that the Toronto Rock & Roll Revival was the firs place a crown lit lighters and matches and waved them side to side to songs and to welcome performers on stage, Kim Fowley is credited with coming up with this to help ease John Lennon’s stage fright.
Fun Fact 2: This was also the birth place of the Alice Cooper famous ‘Chicken Incident’ where a chicken was thrown on stage and was later torn to pieces by the crown reported Alice, others say that Alice had bitten its head of prior to throwing it back into the crowd. Toronto 1 Chicken 0.
Fun Fact 3: Brower and Lennon attempted to produce a world peace festival in 1970, but failed to agree on details and were overwhelmed with both political and internecine opposition.
