Johnny Ramone (real name John Cummings) had a specific vision of the band’s trademark. Each band member would have the same last name. Each would adopt the uniform of Converse sneakers, torn jeans, and leather jacket.

The Ramones were a genre-smashing band that laid the foundation for the punk movement in the 1970s. But their unity of wardrobe and identity, along with their unique sound, made them stand out. Johnny claimed to have no influences whatsoever as a guitarist. “I wanted our music to sound as original as possible.”

When the band formed, he said, “I stopped listening to everything.” Johnny’s “Chatterbox” T-shirt gives props to the New York Dolls’ single of the same name, taken from the band’s second record, “Too Much Too Soon.”
