You’ve seen Ghost World, how ‘bout American Splendor? Long before those movies were spinning yarns of a forgotten time in pop culture? “WHAT’S GOING ON HERE?” “WHAT’S HE DOING TO OUR DAUGHTER?” All the way from Memphis to the Hollywood Bowl, or in this case the Whisky A Go-Go. CREEM’s lens man on the scene Richard Creamer, no relation, just a similar passion for the glitteratti of the day.
The year was 1974, the likes of Alice Cooper, David Bowie, T.Rex, Iggy & the Stooges, the Sweet, and Mott The Hoople were all glammed up with someplace to go. Who’s that man behind those Foster Grants you ask? Mott’s very own Ian Hunter, singer, songwriter, author and of course young dude, he couldn’t pass up the chance to sport Boy Howdy’s big daddy, Mr. Dreamwhip. Drawn from the same R. Crumb pen, the legendary perverto cartoonist and western mystic, while sitting curbside at the crossroads of Cass & Parson in Detroit, 1969.
Crumb’s creation graced CREEM Magazine’s cover twice, the 2nd issue of the then underground magazine and again in November 1971, hitting national newsstands. Until now, Boy Howdy got all the attention, even had a cameo appearance in Almost Famous, but never forgetting those who paved the way, Mr. Dreamwhip again sees his day. Altogether now, everybody say it! “ME NEXT, MISTER DREAMWHIP!” CREEMmagazine.com continues to deliver classic as well as contemporary fodder on the music scene and pop culture front, there is still more on the way.
