The Ramones
The next time someone tries to tell you that some English band introduced the world to punk, you should reply by cranking out the Ramones' self-titled debut album from 1976. Because one listen to "Beat on the Brat" or "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue" makes it abundantly clear that Queens, New York natives Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee and company were architects of the form.
They didn't need radically modish haircuts or safety pins through their cheeks to make their point, either. The Ramone "brothers" (who weren't related by blood but all took on this nom de guerre) favored long, stringy hair, black leather jackets, peg-leg jeans and (in the case of frontman Joey Ramone) wire-frame shades. Yet the purity of their joyous, authority-spurning racket was never in doubt.
But The Ramones' forward-looking buzzsaw pop, which would profoundly influence a generation of three-chord thrashers, also turned an affectionate eye on the tenderer tunes of the '50s and '60s, often achieving a miraculous balance of melody and aggression. In 2002 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
And they sure loved their T-shirts, modeling a menagerie of cool, tough, outrageous and/or playful designs during their heyday. We're proud to offer reproductions of 17 tees originally worn by Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee Ramone.
