Janis Joplin
The rock pantheon includes some great wailers, shouters and belters, but few who could preach it like Janis Joplin.
The Texas-born siren's intensity and authenticity worked audiences into a lather, whether she was assaying the blues, psychedelic rock or rootsy pop; her freewheeling, often raunchy patter was both wicked and wise. In her granny glasses and hippie-mama attire, hoisting a bottle of bourbon, she also embodied a new kind of female star. Though she was taken from us far too soon, she left an indelible mark on modern music.
When she appeared at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, she was like a force of nature. She first hit the charts with her band Big Brother and the Holding Company, reaching the #1 spot with "Piece of My Heart"; Janis Joplin was a solo act by the time she owned the stage at Woodstock in '69. The following year she was gone, but 1971 saw the posthumous release of Pearl, which boasted her timeless rendering of "Me and Bobby McGee" and the a cappella classic "Mercedes Benz." We can only imagine what summits she might've reached if she'd been able to keep going.
