Island Records
Island Records celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009. Formed in Jamaica by Chris Blackwell and Graeme Goodall (and relocating to the UK in 1962), the imprint was crucial in popularizing Jamaican pop music (including rock steady, ska and reggae) to the world at large during the '60s; acts such as Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker, Lee Perry and Toots and the Maytals were first cut to vinyl under Island's auspices. When reggae achieved a global profile, Island releases such as the dazzling film soundtrack "The Harder They Come" and key discs by Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Perry, the Maytals, Steel Pulse, Burning Spear, Black Uhuru, Gregory Isaacs and Augustus Pablo became indispensable.
Island Records and its affiliated labels expanded to other kinds of music during the subsequent decade, dissemating works by folk trailblazer John Martyn, art-rockers King Crimson, Roxy Music and Brian Eno; post-punk/new wave groups like Ultravox and Killing Joke, and countless others. The ensuing years have seen Island releases from Morrissey, PJ Harvey, Tricky, The Orb, Pulp and other cutting-edge artists. Though Island Records has been part of numerous regimes and music groups over the years, it has always embodied an adventurous, international approach to music.
