Dudley Moore & Peter Cook
From the time they met as part of the U.K. comedy revue Beyond the Fringe, the stork-like, sepulchral Peter Cook and the diminutive jazz musician Dudley Moore were a match made in heaven. Their innovative, absurdist approach to sketch comedy helped pave the way for Monty Python, Fry and Laurie, and a host of others; one need only sample such routines as "The Frog and the Peach" or "One Leg Too Few" to understand their impact on the form. They became an unbeatable comedic team, collaborating on "Not Only ... But Also," "Goodbye Again" (based on their Pete and Dud characters), the films "The Wrong Box" and "Bedazzled," and more.
Perhaps their most notorious collaboration was the raunchy, besotted Derek and Clive, immortalized on albums and in the 1979 documentary film "Derek and Clive Get the Horn." The two have since become staples of comedy film and TV in the U.K. and the U.S., and have periodically reunited onstage to perform their classic sketches.
