Chris Difford
"There's a stain on my notebook where your coffee cup was," goes a signature Chris Difford lyric, which you may recall from the winsome Squeeze hit "Black Coffee in Bed." Difford's eye for detail and insight into the human heart suggest that his notebook has seen more than most of us will ever imagine. As the lyricist and baritone vocal in the aforementioned pop-rock band, he has long served as an arch, hyper-literate counterweight to composer-singer-lead guitarist Glenn Tilbrook's expressive tenor and flighty solos.
But Chris Difford has also worked his wondrous wordsmithery with such collaborators as Elton John, Lamont Dozier and Bryan Ferry; snagged two Ivor Novello awards and a Nordhoff Robbins Silver Clef (presented to him by Lily Allen, who likened the experience to being an actor handing a trophy to DeNiro); and penned a stage musical, "Labeled With Love," with Tilbrook. He's released two solo albums and continues to record and tour sporadically with his old mates in Squeeze. He also runs a busy recording studio and conducts a regular songwriters' workshop at Hurst House in Wales. The man's a dynamo, in other words, and his notebook continues to yield delightful surprises.
