John Lennon - Grapefruit T-Shirt

Yoko Ono had first performed ‘A Grapefruit In The World Of Park’ in 1961, and in 1964 published a book called ‘Grapefruit: A Book Of Instructions And Drawings’, which she sent to John Lennon three years later while the pair  were circling each other before becoming a couple.

Here, John Lennon is seen in a ‘Grapefruit T-shirt’ while at a book - signing session at Selfridges in London, UK, in July 1971. Lennon had written an introduction for the re-issue of the book, which he had kept by his bedside after Ono sent it to him, being alternately vexed and delighted by its contents. John once quipped that the book, a collection of ‘instructional’ verses by Ono, was the best one he’d ever burned. The T-shirt was originally a promotional item for the book, which you can still find copies of on the internet.
